The term TBI stands for traumatic brain injury. A traumatic brain injury refers to any type of trauma to the head that results in a disruption in brain functioning. This may range from a brief loss of consciousness to a more extended period of unconsciousness, amnesia or dysfunction.
The term TBI has increased in popularity, especially with regard to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as many returning OEF/OIF veterans suffer from deployment-related traumatic brain injuries that can increase the risk for or complicate treatment of PTSD.
