Negative Psychotic Symptoms

Definition:

Symptoms characterized by absence or loss of experience. Negative psychotic symptoms include:

  • Decrease in or complete loss of the ability to emotionally respond to people, events, etc.

  • Decrease in speaking (alogia).

  • Difficulty sticking with activities and tasks (avolition); appearance of being unmotivated or withdrawn; may have difficulty completing even the simplest of tasks, such as getting dressed in the morning.

The negative symptoms are associated with the diagnosis of schizophrenia.
