Definition: The term benzodiazepines refers to a class of drugs that have a sedative effect, and thus, are often used to successfully alleviate anxiety. These drugs are often referred to as tranquilizers. Popular benzodiazepines include Valium, Xanax, and Ativan.

As with all prescribed medications, it is important to follow your doctor's orders for taking and discontinuing the medication, as well as monitor for potential side effects such as daytime drowsiness.
