Question: How Are People Diagnosed with PTSD?
Answer: To be diagnosed with PTSD, a person must meet with a mental health professional with experience in diagnosing and treating PTSD. The mental health professional will determine if you meet certain requirements. In general, the person has to have experienced a certain type of traumatic event and have had a particular emotional response to the event. In addition, the person needs to experience a certain combination of symptoms for some time following the event. Remember, just because a person may have experienced a traumatic event does not necessarily mean that they will develop PTSD.
