Helping Your Child Cope with the Recent Shootings

It has seemed recently as though there is a different story in the news everyday about a shooting that has occurred. There is no doubt that hearing or reading about these events can be very stressful. However, these events may be particular difficult for children to learn about.  In fact, studies have found that children can experience high levels of stress as a result of being exposed to media coverage of traumatic events. Parents can play a major role in helping their children cope with stressful life events, thereby reducing their risk for developing more severe anxiety. The American Psychological Association provides some tips on talking with your child about the recent school shootings. Following these tips may help your child better understand these events, reducing stress and anxiety.
